What Has Japan Given the World?

Postby kabukiboy on 2004-02-17 Tue 19:16:31

The Arabs gave the West algebra and the concept of zero value,
the Chinese gave the West gunpowder and printing techniques,
the West has since given the rest of the world rational science and
technology (I'm going to leave out all the negative stuff for this
thread, even though I know there's lots of it)....What do you think
Japan has given the world that is particularly noteworthy, that has
enriched our lives?

Sigh. I know I can't stop the flood of insouciant postings that will
inevitably come this thread's way, but SOME serious answers
would be nice....

More than a couple of pretty goddamn amazing martial arts. The strongest production bolt-action rifle ever made. The only good version of the AR-180 to date.

Gyakuzuki...most of those things u mentioned don't count because they are not Japanese inventions. They were simply mass-produced here.

Japan hasn't really given the world anything, as Japan is a politically
determined region and not capable of such things. There are however a
number of individuals who happen to be Japanese that have given the world
quite a lot, like the microchip guy (who due to funding shifted off to Intel
back in the early seventies - it's in the textbooks) and that Takamats (sic) guy
who invented the floppy disc and those funny shoe things.
Coiner of the expressions "meta-thread" and "gaisatsu".

Not as many inventions as improvements on inventions.

Also, Akira Kurosawa and Takeshi Kitano.

Nintendo revtalized the video game industry in the 80's, then Sony pushed it into the mainstream in the 90's.

And I'm a huge fan of Ryuichi Sakamoto. And Oshinko.

Japan has some great filmmakers. Kurosawa, Ozu, Miyazaki, Itami...Great novelists too.

Oh, and Ukiyo-e prints helped shape the art world. Pretty much responsible for post-impressionism. The most signifigant contributions are in dynamic composition and the use of the black line, which was formerly taboo but adapted with success by van Gogh.

Seems like the arts are were Japan makes there greatest unique contributions.

MA:

In complete agreement with you. It has been with in the realm of visual arts and aesthethic principles that Japan has made its greatest contribution to world culture. Japanese art has colonized our visual world to an extent that most people don't think of it or aren't aware of it. Modern architecture, graphic design, pop art, landscaping --all have been shaped by the Japanese influence. And it has been a wondeful influence. Japanese aesthetics are probably the most highly developed and brilliant of all Asian cultures, and are both a wonderful companion and counterpoint to the principles of Western classicism. (Kabuki and Noh have also had a big influence on modern twentieth-century theatre in the West, and modern poetry is also indebted in large part to Japanese forms.)

The OP asked nicely, so I did it. Also I didn't realize it was archived when I started looked into this thread and posting problems.

Shaped the artistic vision of the greatest architect of the 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright.

On a side note I hope that by "leaving the bad stuff out" you meant for everyone and not just the west.....I think you will find bad things have come from every corner of the globe..NOT just the west. Sorry, it is a point that I never get bored of making because it annoys me.
